Cito on the old Silk Road: a new NIS school in Turkestan

Over the past ten years Cito International consultants have supported Nazarbayev Intellectual Schools (NIS) in Kazakhstan in selecting the most gifted young learners for a high-level trilingual secondary education program that meets international standards for pre-academic achievement.

In November 2021 a new school, the 21st, was opened in the city of Turkestan: once a famous ‘karavanseray’ on the Silk Road between Europe and China. Now it is the booming, fast growing new capital city of South-Kazakhstan.

Cito senior advisor Nico Dieteren was invited to observe the selection test administration on April 14 and 15, organized in this school for the first time. Nearly 1300 learners from grade 6 participated in two days of test taking. Subjects tested were mathematics, quantitative reasoning and natural sciences on day 1 and the languages Kazakh, Russian and English on day 2.

All results, of all 21 schools that took the test, will be analysed and reported on by Cito’s psychometric department, before the NIS organization can officially announce in May which learners will be awarded a state-funded scholarship for six years of education in one of the NIS schools. Cito International is proud to be a part of this very special educational modernization project in the Eurasian part of the famous Silk Road.
