Computer and Web Based Testing

As a leading provider of assessment solutions Cito naturally invests much energy in the development of new techniques and the application of ICT in tests. Computer based testing, Computer Adaptive Testing, and Web Based Testing are innovative new formats that provide versatile assessment options for modern education, learning and training.

The development of tests in a digital world involves much more than simply transferring traditional testing models from paper to screen. The aim of using computers and technology in assessment is to improve the quality of assessment in terms of validity, effectiveness and efficiency. Incorporating the latest technological developments into testing requires significant research and investment in fields such as multimedia design, psychometrics, and information and computer technology.

Cito supports ongoing research in the following areas:
  • design (and development) of tools and systems that support item and test development, secure administration and reporting interactivity and rich media
  • validity and efficiency evaluation for new types of items
  • design of itemtemplates
  • computer adaptive test design

Computer-based tests

Cito develops computer-based tests for many different target groups at all levels of education and/or ability. The computer, or rather, computer based testing, can be useful at all stages of the testing process, from the construction of the tests, to the logistics of test-giving, to the reporting of results.

Computer based testing offers both time-saving efficiency and flexibility. Tests can be taken independent of time or place. The computer can produce a separate test for each individual candidate. Tests can be scored immediately after the candidate has taken them, providing instant feedback. Another major advantage of computer-based testing is that it can make use of multi-media materials, thus increasing the range and therefore the validity of the test. Computer based tests are extensively pre-tested, allowing for the establishment of various norms (national, age, peer group). The ability to measure individual performance against group performance makes computer-based tests highly suitable for use in official examinations.

Computer-adaptive tests

In addition to computer-based tests, Cito has developed computer-adaptive testing. Computer-adaptive testing is used to test candidates on an individualised basis. Adaptive tests are computerised tests that automatically adapt to a student's level of ability, making every test a productive experience and exercise for both students and teachters.Adaptive testing has several advantages:
  • For students, it means that testing time is shorter and that all tests are suitable for all levels of ability. No student is ever confronted with a test that they cannot complete.
  • For the teacher it means a reduced workload, as all data can be analysed and registered by Cito, offering a range of interpretations of results for the same test. All tests produce meaningful results.

Computer-controlled testing programs offer the following benefits:

  • large item banks
  • a computer program for composing tests
  • on-screen instructions for students
  • modules enabling the teacher to choose specific tests for individual students
  • modules for recording students' results
  • teaching guides
